Where is Joanna Gaines When You Need Her?

Okay people, I need some help.

How do you pick a paint color that looks good, will do well for resale, AND brings you joy??

My husband and I are completely redoing our 1970s wood paneled kitchen/dining room and can’t decide on a paint color to save our lives.

We’re adding white and gray cabinets and hickory flooring. Shiplap has been discussed, but I’m afraid it’s too trendy. We have a cute little ranch house and are going for a “modern farmhouse” look (thus the white cabinets and natural wood flooring).

Every picture I’ve seen of a “modern farmhouse” kitchen has white walls though, and I think that’d be overwhelming in a space this large. Also, the rest of the house has neutral gray walls.

So, what are your thoughts? White? Yellow? Blue? Green? Gray? Beige? Help me out here.

UPDATE:

I think we’ve decided on the green color: SW Celery. It’s lovely, warm without being yellow, and will pair beautifully with white cabinets, light hardwood floors, and butcher block counter tops (potentially ash with walnut striping).

  1. First of all, stop everything and watch “Mr Blanding’s Builds his Dream House” with Myrna Loy. I think the lightest blue would look best with the grey and white cabinets, but white is a safer color. You can then use paintings and dishes to highlight with blue.
