Fledglings

Our yard is home to a number of robin, blue jay, and grackle families. The other morning I found a robin fledgling chilling in the middle of our front yard. He stayed so still and let me walk right up to him to take a photo.

That same morning I found another fledgling, this time dead in our ditch. It was the second one I’ve found this month and it’s heartbreaking.

I’m keeping an eye on the fledgling that’s camped out in our front yard and hoping and praying he makes it to adulthood. We have multiple outdoor cats in our neighborhood so I’m constantly worried my birds are going to be eaten.

I realize I probably shouldn’t care this much about wild birds, but I do. I want them to thrive. I want our yard to be a safe place for birds to raise their young and live their lives. If there’s anything I can do to stop another fledgling from dying, I will do it.

I know fledglings aren’t completely helpless and their parents are probably nearby keeping an eye on them, but it’s so hard to remember. Especially when you see a little fluffy bird cheeping piteously for hours at a time.

But a bird has to learn how to be a bird, and they can’t do that if I try to “rescue” them.

Hopefully I won’t be this anxious when my own kids “leave the nest” (fortunately that won’t happen anytime soon since they’re still toddlers). Hopefully I’ll learn to be chill like a robin mom, giving my kid space to learn and grow, while also reassuring them that I’ll be there to help if they ever really need me.

Sunday, Fun Day!

Man oh man, have the last few weeks been busy!

Last weekend I was a seat filler at the Tony Awards, which was AH-MAZING. It was so much fun to dress up and I sat in some really good seats (always in the first 10 rows, most of them aisle seats). Over the course of the evening, I sat in Taylor Schilling’s seat (Orange is the New Black), behind Christian Borle (Something Rotten!), and near Christopher Wheeldon (choreo: An American in Paris); I took a pic for and shook the hand of Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford (You Can’t Take it With You); and saw Bernadette Peters in person (a dream come true!). Here are some pics from the evening:

Feeling glamorous!

Then this past Sunday, my fiance and I went to the 10th Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island! This is one of my favorite summer events in NYC. Thousands of people flock to Governor’s Island to listen to live 1920s style music by Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra, dance, eat, and most of all to admire everyone’s 1920s costumes and vintage dresses! This year I did more lounging than dancing, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Don’t worry if you missed this event! They’re holding it again on August 15th & 16th! Buy your tickets now as they sell out fast!

Life Changes

So many changes have happened in the last few months:

1. I dyed my hair!

My lovely blond locks are now a dark auburn brown color and I love it. Emma Stone is my hair idol and if she can go from blond to auburn, then so can I.

2. It’s finally warm enough to be outside and not want to cry!

I am LOVING this weather. Highs in the mid-70s is my ideal temperature. [cue “Sunny with a High of 75” by RelientK] Cool enough in the evenings for me to open my window; warm enough during the day for me to go without a cardigan. Keep it coming, Spring. I love you.  Continue reading

NYC Summer Lovin’

Y’all, I love summer in NYC. There are so many free events and classes and movies and dances outside in the many, many parks of the city. It may be hot and we may all be dying of heat exhaustion in our non-air conditioned apartments, but that’s okay because we’re going to spend most of our time outside attending awesome, FREE events.

So let the planning begin! Jazz Age Lawn Party! Dancing in Bryant Park! Bryant Park FitClub! Movies at Bryant Park! Midsummer Night Swing! MetOpera Summer in HD Festival! Central Park Film Festival! ETC, ETC!!!!
