Fledglings

Our yard is home to a number of robin, blue jay, and grackle families. The other morning I found a robin fledgling chilling in the middle of our front yard. He stayed so still and let me walk right up to him to take a photo.

That same morning I found another fledgling, this time dead in our ditch. It was the second one I’ve found this month and it’s heartbreaking.

I’m keeping an eye on the fledgling that’s camped out in our front yard and hoping and praying he makes it to adulthood. We have multiple outdoor cats in our neighborhood so I’m constantly worried my birds are going to be eaten.

I realize I probably shouldn’t care this much about wild birds, but I do. I want them to thrive. I want our yard to be a safe place for birds to raise their young and live their lives. If there’s anything I can do to stop another fledgling from dying, I will do it.

I know fledglings aren’t completely helpless and their parents are probably nearby keeping an eye on them, but it’s so hard to remember. Especially when you see a little fluffy bird cheeping piteously for hours at a time.

But a bird has to learn how to be a bird, and they can’t do that if I try to “rescue” them.

Hopefully I won’t be this anxious when my own kids “leave the nest” (fortunately that won’t happen anytime soon since they’re still toddlers). Hopefully I’ll learn to be chill like a robin mom, giving my kid space to learn and grow, while also reassuring them that I’ll be there to help if they ever really need me.

Thank you, Jane Austen.

About a year ago I started a Jane Austen Book Club. We read Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and Northanger Abbey. However, we were interrupted by holiday plans, new babies, and then the coronavirus pandemic.

Jane Austen has been a comfort to me during these last few months. I wasn’t able to meet with my friends, and all of the projects and events I was planning were cancelled, but I could listen to Pride & Prejudice three times. I could listen to Persuasion three times. I could watch the new Emma movie multiple times. I could discuss all of the novels and film adaptations with a Jane Austen fan club I found on Facebook.

Reading Jane Austen’s novels is both an escape and a solace. I’ve been very lonely, and feeling unmoored, but Jane Austen and the community surrounding here are there to comfort and encourage me.

So, thank you, Ms. Jane Austen. Thank you for writing such delightful works of literature that I can read and analyze and ponder and discuss with others. You have done me a great service indeed.

Ah, For a Simpler Time!

This blog post was written a few years ago, but the sentiments remain the same. It’s a gorgeous day in TN, so enjoy this little post and do some picnicking or novel reading today.

It’s happening again…

I’m pinning Regency era empire waist gowns on Pinterest. I’m listening to classical music. I’m sitting on a bench in one of the rare gardens in NYC and sighing. I’m itching to paint. I’m reading Austenland.

and I’m longing to be Lizzy Bennett, or Emma, or Jane, or even Fanny Price. Again.

Where is Joanna Gaines When You Need Her?

Okay people, I need some help.

How do you pick a paint color that looks good, will do well for resale, AND brings you joy??

My husband and I are completely redoing our 1970s wood paneled kitchen/dining room and can’t decide on a paint color to save our lives.

We’re adding white and gray cabinets and hickory flooring. Shiplap has been discussed, but I’m afraid it’s too trendy. We have a cute little ranch house and Continue reading

Resolutions

Most people make resolutions at New Years, but I like to make them during the summer. This year I’m resolving to be more consistent about blogging.

I have plenty of good excuses for not blogging: new baby, new house, new family business. But I need a few things for myself, like my morning coffee and my Barre class, and blogging is one of those things.

It’s crazy to think that we have officially been Tennessee residents for two years! We love the little town we live in and being closer to family. And we’ve even made friends! Yay!!

Those of you who are moms know how important it is to Continue reading
