Things are finally starting to come together. It’s a new season, both literally and figuratively. As the air cools and the leaves start to change colors, I am applying to jobs, working on a personal website, and enjoying the friendships I have in NYC.
A few weeks ago I took a contemporary dance class for the first time in years. It was AMAZING! Sure, I felt stiff and awkward and generally out of shape, but I left feeling inspired and sore in a good way. Dancing makes me feel more alive. I seriously can’t wait until the next class!!
Then, this past weekend, I got to go to the New York City Ballet and see a program of pieces composed or arranged by Stravinsky and choreographed by Balanchine. A few of the pieces were very odd: discordant music and angular movements; but a few were heartbreaking-ly beautiful, particularly Duo Concertant. If you are in NYC and have a chance to see one of the dances choreographed by Balanchine (a daring choreographing genius), then please do so. You will not regret it.
And finally, tonight I volunteered at the American Theatre Wing’s reception for their grant recipients. It was great to be surrounded by people who devote their lives to theater in America. The evening served as a reminder that I am a part of this community, that I too have devoted (at least part of) my life to theater and the Arts (with a capital “A”).
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I am slowly realizing what I want and what matters to me. For all of you post-graduates out there looking for jobs and trying to figure out what it is you want to do with the rest of your life, know that you’re not alone. I feel ya.
